Professor of symphonic conducting at the “Sibelius Academy”, Helsinki
Atso Almila (born 1953 in Helsinki) studied conducting at the Sibelius Academy under prof. Jorma Panula and graduated 1979.
He has been the chief conductor of Tampere Philharmonic, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and Joensuu Symphony Orchestra in Finland.
Almila has done a career conducting several youth philharmonies around Europe and been teaching conducting assisting the previous professor; from 2013 he has worked himself as the Professor of Conducting and Orchestra Schooling at the Sibelius Academy, now part of the University of Arts, Helsinki.
Almila is also known as a composer with his 5th symphony under work, six operas, several concertos and many chamber works.
